Rhinoplasty (Nose re-shaping)

The information contained gives a general idea about the operation and does not replace a consultation.
The consultation is personal and specific to the individual concerned.
All consultations involve taking a thorough medical history and a physical examination of the relevant area involved.

How does a rhinoplasty help?

  • It can improve the size and shape of the nose.
  • It can bring the nose into proportion with the face.
  • It can help improve nasal appearance after injury.

Tell me about the operation?

  • Operation takes 1 to 2 hours depending on what is required which would have been discussed at the consultation.
  • Discharged home the following day possibly with nasal packs within the nostrils and a splint over the nose to protect the nose.
  • Review at 5 days to remove the splint and packs.
  • Bruising and swelling will take approximately 2 weeks to settle.
  • Nasal breathing may be difficult up to 4 weeks.

What are the possible complications?

  • Scars - if surgery is needed to the tip of the nose or the operation is a second procedure, then there will be a small scar on the underside of the nose. Remaining scars are within the nose.
  • Infection - this can happen after the operation and may require antibiotics.
  • Bleeding - occasionally a collection can form under the skin of the nose which would need removal.
  • Smell - occasionally the sense of smell can be altered but this is rare.

These are the commonest complications. Other more rare ones would also be discussed at the consultation.

When can I get back to work?

  • A rest period of 2 weeks is usually recommended.
  • Any external sutures will require removal at day 5.
  • Body contact sports to be avoided for up to 4 weeks.
