Face Lift

The information contained gives a general idea about the operation and does not replace a consultation.
The consultation is personal and specific to the individual concerned.
All consultations involve taking a thorough medical history and a physical examination of the relevant area involved.

How does a face lift help?

  • Otherwise known as a rhytidectomy, a face lift helps to remove excess skin creases by tightening the skin.
  • It removes the sagging jowls and the hollowness below the eyes by lifting the face.
  • It helps to tighten the neck and can help re-define it more.

A face lift rejuvenates but does not stop the ageing process.

Tell me about the operation?

  • Operation takes approximately 4 hours.
  • It requires an overnight in patient stay.
  • It may well be combined with other procedures such as blepharoplasty (eyelid reduction) or a brow lift to raise the forehead and eyebrows.
  • Liposuction can be used to help tighten sagging skin under the chin.
  • Sutures will require removal at 7 days on the face and at 12 days in the scalp.
  • The swelling and bruising can last up to 2 weeks.

What are the possible complications?

  • Scars - these will be around the ear at the front and the back and within the hair-line both in front of and behind the ear.
  • Infection - this can happen after the operation and may require antibiotics.
  • Bleeding - occasionally a collection can form under the skin of the face requiring removal.
  • Numbness - occasionally sensation over the skin can be reduced but this commonly returns after time.
  • Rarely bruising to the nerve that moves muscles over the face can occur reducing the movement but this is very rarely permanent.

These are the commonest complications. Other more rare ones would also be discussed at the consultation.

It is very important that people who smoke should endeavour to stop prior to this surgery as this does increase the risk of complications.

When can I get back to work?

  • A rest period of 2 weeks is usually recommended.
  • Return to lighter duties initially to prevent soreness.
