Blepharoplasty (eyelid reduction)

The information contained gives a general idea about the operation and does not replace a consultation.
The consultation is personal and specific to the individual concerned.
All consultations involve taking a thorough medical history and a physical examination of the relevant area involved.

How does eyelid reduction help?

  • Excess folds of skin on the upper eyelids can make the eyelids droop and the eyes appear tired and heavy.
  • Drooping of the lower eyelids can also give a tired appearance and can form unsightly bags under the eyes.

This operation is often performed together with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as face lift and brow lift.

By reducing the excess skin and so the drooping of the eyelids, the eyes appear rejuvenated and younger which can lead to an improvement in psycho-social well-being.

Tell me about the operation?

  • Operation takes 1 to 2 hours depending whether it is the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.
  • The upper eyelids can be done under local anaesthesia if desired.
  • Discharge home is usually the same day if it is the only procedure performed.
  • Sutures will require removal at 7 days.
  • On average it takes 2 to 3 weeks for bruising and swelling to settle.

What are the possible complications?

  • Scars - these will be hidden in the folds of the upper eyelid and within the creases of the lower eyelid.
  • Infection - this can happen after the operation and may require antibiotics.
  • Bleeding - occasionally a collection can form under the eyelid which would need removal.

These are the commonest complications. Other more rare ones would also be discussed at the consultation.

When can I get back to work?

  • A rest period of 2 weeks is usually recommended.
  • Contact lenses should be avoided for up to 3 weeks as the eyes can become temporarily dry.
