Arm lift and Thigh Lift

The information contained gives a general idea about the operation and does not replace a consultation.
The consultation is personal and specific to the individual concerned.
All consultations involve taking a thorough medical history and a physical examination of the relevant area involved.

How does an arm lift/ thigh lift help?

  • Loose skin can gather under the arms or on the inner aspect of the thighs.
  • This is more apparent after weight loss and also occurs with the ageing process.
  • An arm lift or a thigh lift helps to lift the skin up into the armpit or the groin and tighten it around the limb so removing any sagging and rejuvenating the appearance of the limb.

Tell me about the operation?

  • Operation takes 1 to 2 hours for each procedure (arm or thigh lift).
  • There will be drains at each site removed the following day.
  • Overnight stay required.
  • Compression garments supplied to lend support to the wounds.
  • Dissolving stitches used to close the wounds.

What are the possible complications?

  • Scars - These can become stretched and thickened requiring special dressings to be used after the wounds have sealed.
  • Infection - this can happen after the operation and may require antibiotics and can occasionally lead to slow healing in the armpits or groin but will always settle over time.
  • Bleeding - occasionally a collection can form under the skin which would need removal.
  • Sensation - sometimes the skin of the inner arm or inner thigh can become numb but this improves over several months as the skin nerves regrow.

These are the commonest complications. Other more rare ones would also be discussed at the consultation.

When can I get back to work?

  • A rest period of 2 weeks is usually recommended.
  • Gentle activity encouraged but to keep the wounds clean and dry as possible.
